A TWO-FOLD PROCEDURE<\/h4>\n<\/header>\n

The annotation\u00a0of the Modal Corpus was performed as a two-step\u00a0procedure :<\/p>\n

(1) firstly the epistemic constructions were\u00a0identified;<\/p>\n

(2) then several\u00a0semantic, syntactic, pragmatic and discursive features\u00a0of each epistemic construction were annotated.<\/p>\n

IDENTIFYING EPISTEMIC CONSTRUCTIONS<\/h4>\n

We identified\u00a0the totality of\u00a0constructions that explicitly signal the process of shared attribution of a truth value to the propositional tokens that compose a discourse<\/em>.\u00a0Here<\/a>, a theoretical justification of\u00a0the functional definition\u00a0of epistemic construction.<\/p>\n

ANNOTATING EPISTEMIC CONSTRUCTIONS<\/h4>\n

We\u00a0represented<\/em>\u00a0the\u00a0epistemic constructions<\/em>\u00a0identified in the corpus\u00a0as complex triadic constructions consisting of a marker, a scope and a relation between the marker and the scope .\u00a0Here<\/a>,\u00a0a theoretical justification of the formal representation of epistemic constructions\u00a0as triadic constructions.<\/p>\n

We annotated several semantic, syntactic and pragmatic features\u00a0of the marker, the scope and the relation<\/em>.\u00a0Here<\/a>,\u00a0a detailed description of the annotation scheme.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

OPERATIONALIZING THE ANNOTATION TASK<\/h4>\n

Here<\/a>,\u00a0the decision trees that guided the\u00a0annotators\u00a0in the identification \u00a0of\u00a0epistemic constructions and in the annotation task.<\/p>\n

Inter-annotator\u00a0AGREEMENT TESTS<\/h4>\n

The originality of the annotation procedure led us to develop an\u00a0original technique for testing the inter annotator agreement<\/em>, essentially based on the percentage of superposition between the spans of text identified as markers or scopes by the annotators. \u00a0The following\u00a0article<\/a>\u00a0describes this technique.<\/p>\n
