{"id":2,"date":"2016-03-09T11:12:00","date_gmt":"2016-03-09T10:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/modal.msh-vdl.fr\/?page_id=2"},"modified":"2017-01-21T15:44:58","modified_gmt":"2017-01-21T14:44:58","slug":"page-d-exemple","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/modal.msh-vdl.fr\/","title":{"rendered":"Description"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<h4>THE CORPUS<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The\u00a0Modal Corpus\u00a0consists of <strong>three equivalent resources\u00a0of English, French and Italian dialogues<\/strong>\u00a0drawn, respectively, from\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.linguistics.ucsb.edu\/research\/santa-barbara-corpus\">Santa Barbara Corpus of Spoken American English<\/a>\u00a0(for English),the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/eslo.huma-num.fr\/\">ESLO Corpus<\/a>, plus\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.info.univ-tours.fr\/~antoine\/parole_publique\/OTG\/index.html\">OTG Corpus\u00a0<\/a>and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.info.univ-tours.fr\/~antoine\/parole_publique\/Accueil_UBS\/index.html\">Accueil UBS Corpus<\/a>\u00a0(for French), \u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.parlaritaliano.it\/index.php\/it\/volip\">VoLip Corpus\u00a0<\/a>(for Italian)\u00a0<strong>annotated for epistemic modality<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We annotated about\u00a0<strong>20.000 words per language for a total amount of 2824 epistemic constructions<\/strong>\u00a0(833 for the English Corpus, \u00a01271 for the French Corpus, 720 for the Italian Corpus).<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\">THEORETICAL UNDERPINNINGS<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In order to annotate epistemic modality in dialogues we subscribed to\u00a0<strong>a communitarian<\/strong>\u00a0(Stalnaker 1978),\u00a0<strong>dynamic<\/strong>\u00a0(Groenendijk &amp; Stokhof, 1991) and<strong>\u00a0interactionist<\/strong>\u00a0(Ginzburg 2012)<strong>\u00a0approach to semantics<\/strong>, which led us to refine the traditional definition of epistemicity and put forward that\u00a0<strong>any construction that explicitly\u00a0signal the process of shared attribution of a truth value to the propositional tokens that compose a discourse should be considered as an epistemic construction.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\">APPROACH<\/h4>\n<p><strong>We did not want to annotate a predetermined list of epistemic\u00a0constructions<\/strong>\u00a0and assign functions to them.<\/p>\n<p>Rather,\u00a0<strong>we provided a theoretical meaningful<\/strong>\u00a0solid,\u00a0<strong>operationalizable definition of epistemic modality<\/strong>\u00a0and, on this ground,\u00a0<strong>we identified the\u00a0linguistic constructions\u00a0that realize\u00a0epistemic modality\u00a0in the three different languages.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a second step,\u00a0<strong>we also specified the semantic, syntactic and pragmatic function of each epistemic construction identified.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>RESOURCES<\/h4>\n<p>The annotated corpus is available\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/modal.msh-vdl.fr\/index.php\/le-corpus\/?lang=en\">HERE<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>Funding<\/h4>\n<p>The Modal Project was funded by \u00ab\u00a0La Maison des Sciences de l&rsquo;Homme du Val de Loire\u00a0\u00bb, the IRCOM Consortium, the\u00a0\u00ab\u00a0Laboratoire Lig\u00e9rien de Linguistique &#8211; UMR7270\u00a0\u00bb, the Groningen Meaning Bank.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE CORPUS The\u00a0Modal Corpus\u00a0consists of three equivalent resources\u00a0of English, French and Italian dialogues\u00a0drawn, respectively, from\u00a0the\u00a0Santa Barbara Corpus of Spoken American English\u00a0(for English),the\u00a0ESLO Corpus, plus\u00a0the\u00a0OTG Corpus\u00a0and the\u00a0Accueil UBS Corpus\u00a0(for French), \u00a0the\u00a0VoLip Corpus\u00a0(for Italian)\u00a0annotated for epistemic modality.
